Angelina Jolie

The traditional green slime flowed at the Kids' Choice Awards, but it was Angelina Jolie's message of empowerment for youngsters that stuck.

Jolie, who has sought to inspire women with public candour about her own health, said that "different is good" as she accepted the favorite villain award Saturday for her movie role as the title character in Maleficent.

When she was young, Jolie said, "I was told I was different. And I felt out of place: too loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, never good at fitting in."

"When someone tells you that you are different, smile and hold your head up and be proud," she said, then added with a wink, "cause a little trouble. It's good for you."

The actor and filmmaker, who disclosed earlier this week that she had undergone additional surgery aimed at preventing cancer, received excited hugs from daughters Shiloh and Zahara when her name was announced.

Other winners at the Nickelodeon channel's fan-voted awards included Emma Stone, who largely escaped its trademark slime when she accepted the best actress award for her role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and favourite family TV show Modern Family, whose stars including Jesse Tyler Ferguson didn't get away clean.

Nick Jonas hosted the ceremony, which also honoured the group Fifth Harmony as favourite new artist and Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 as favourite action stars. The film was voted favorite movie.

Jonas won as favourite male singer but also ended up drenched in the ceremony's trademark green slime, as did Josh Gad (Frozen, Broadway's Book of Mormon), who got slimed by co-presenter Adam Sandler.

Performers included Iggy Azalea with Jennifer Hudson and 5 Seconds of Summer, which ended up taking a goo hit.

Jonas opened the ceremony by noting that One Direction was minus a group member with the exit of Zayn Malik.

"A tough week. ... Lot of girls in the house tonight still struggling after One Direction became Two Direction," he said, then asked, jokingly, "What's next? Fourth Harmony? 3 Seconds of Summer? No, no. The Jonas Brother?"

One Direction didn't appear to accept its trophy as favourite music group.

Others taking part in the ceremony included Jamie Foxx, Meghan Trainor, Chris Rock, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, Kevin James and Little League Baseball sensation Mo'ne Davis.

Jolie, writing in the New York Times on Tuesday, revealed that she had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed in hopes of reducing her risk of cancer.

Two years ago, she disclosed that she carries a defective breast cancer gene that puts her at high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. Her mother died of ovarian cancer, and her maternal grandmother also had ovarian cancer - strong evidence of an inherited, genetic risk that led Jolie to have her healthy breasts removed to try to avoid the same fate.

Bridegrooms

Baraats, or the processions, that accompany grooms are notorious for being late, and keeping the bride and her family waiting.

That doesn't fly in a village in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The groom is fined if he's not punctual, and the baraat is warned that it must not be noisy.

Elders in the village of Taunkpuri Tanda charge Rs. 100 for every minute that a baraat is late. The majority of the 10,000 residents are Muslim.

"Dancing in streets and beating of drums is completely prohibited. We observe all the practices and pleasantries (of weddings) but the villagers here discard the undesired expenditure, pomp and show and do not allow wastage of food items," said Maulana Arshad, the chief cleric of the village.

Families are also told to marry from within the village. "This tradition helps our daughters and sisters remain safe from the ill-intention of anti-social elements emerging rapidly everywhere due to neglect and apathy towards moral and religious values established by our ancestors," said the Maulana.

Dating

When it comes to dating, does a person's physical size really matter? Love comes in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes, these sizes are curvier than the others. Is not having the perfect figure, a negative in the dating world? Are overweight people doomed to a dateless life? Well, not really.

Here are some reasons why you should date an overweight person:

1 Confidence
Have you ever come across a couple - where one of them was physically larger than their significant other? And wondered how they landed themselves a boyfriend/girlfriend? One word: Confidence. What they lack in size, they make up in confidence. And heaps of it.  A fatter person is less likely to be conceited, and snobbish.

2 Curves in the right places
Having curves in the right places is sexy. It comes really handy when it you need to sit on someone's lap in case of tight squeeze, and the person whose lap you sit on benefits cos there's more cushion and less bones.  In fact, they also have super smooth moves on the dance floor.

3 Personality
At the end of the day, if you have a great personality - you will be bringing all the boys/ girls to your yard - irrespective of your size. If you can challenge someone in an intellectual and emotional space, coupled with chemistry, half your battle is won.

4 Sense of humour

We all have different kinds of humour, and if you find one that shares your taste in humour, no amount of BMI is going to get in your way.

Common Health Problems

5 Common Health Problems Women Face Post 30
They say 30 is the new 20. And while we have to admit that 30-year-olds are raring to go, it's not all rosy. With the fancy corporate jobs and the expert balancing act, women barely have time for themselves. Add to that, there are certain changes that occur in a woman's body post 30. As a result, believe it or not, women are more prone to certain disease and illness. That's why it's important to pay attention to your health early. Here are five common health problems you should watch out for after 30.

1. Breast Cancer: Post 30, a woman could develop lumps in her breast. Some lumps are not harmful while others may be cancerous leading to a fatal condition called breast cancer. Do a breast self exam regularly and keep track of any bodily changes. After all, timely detection can save your life.

Breast cancer treatments vary from chemotherapy to breast extraction, which can be quite scary. A medical insurance will be extremely helpful in paying all the bills that follow.

2. Osteoporosis: As we grow older, our bones begin to deteriorate and absorb old bone tissue faster without creating new tissue, which makes our bones weak. This happens due to calcium deficiency and fragile bones that can be painful. Make sure to have a steady calcium intake through appropriate food or supplements.

There are no sure-shot symptoms for osteoporosis, but a bone test can give accurate results. But fret not, these expensive tests will be covered under your medical insurance. Choose a reliable insurance plan like Bharti AXA Smart Health Insurance for example, which not only covers your expenses for the medical treatment but also gives you the liberty to use the compensation amount as per your own discretion. Also the premium that you pay towards your health insurance is eligible for tax deductions.

3. Rheumatoid Arthritis: This is a common condition that results in severe joint pain and usually affects women in the age group of 30 to 60 years. It is an auto-immune disorder that leads to stiffness in the body, pain, inflation and so on. The cause of this disease is unknown and it could happen to anyone. Physical therapy, diet and medication are the only solutions.

4. High Blood Pressure: This is a medical condition where the blood pushes against the lining of the arteries. This can be harmful leading to damage of the blood vessels, heart, brain and other organs. Hypertension, stress and wrong diet can cause this disease in women, especially post 30. So avoid long hours at work and slip some exercise into your routine. A balanced diet will also go a long way in keeping your healthy.

5. Varicose Veins: Varicose veins are a problem that occur in women whose veins swell and become extremely painful. Older women are likely to suffer from this problem, which makes it difficult for them to walk comfortably, sit on the floor for long or even stand continuously.

So take your health seriously and invest in adequate health cover to avail of the best medical treatment available.

How to care Vagina

Use Condoms
You know that rubbers are great at protecting against STDs and pregnancy, but one study found that using condoms helps keep your vagina’s pH level at the status quo so good bacteria, like lactobacilli, can survive in there. And this is super important since those little bacteria help prevent yeast infections, UTIs, and bacterial vaginosis. Just in case you needed another reason to wrap things up.

Wear Cotton Underwear or Go Commando
When it comes to your underwear selection, your vagina has a preference: cotton. That's why most underwear comes with a thin strip of cotton fabric in the crotch. Since it breathes and absorbs moisture, it's the ideal way to clothe your lady parts, says Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., a clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at Yale University. And when you're laying around the house, feel free to go commando so you can let things air out, says Minkin. Just don’t go to the gym sans undies, because you'll want that extra layer between you and germy gym equipment.

Work it Out
Doing kegels is crucial for strengthening your pelvic floor muscles, which are key in producing stronger, mind-blowing orgasms—not to mention bladder control. Note to self: Include kegels in every workout.

Embrace Greek Yogurt
Snacking on yogurt with live cultures helps boost the good bacteria in your hoo-ha, which, as you know, is all around fantastic for preventing annoying vaginal problems like yeast infections, says Minkin. Just be careful that you’re not noshing on the super-sugary kind, because that could make you more susceptible to those infections.

Always Go To Your Annual Exam
Although new guidelines advise against annual pelvic exams if you're symptom-free and not pregnant, a visit to your doctor isn't just about poking around your lady parts, says Minkin. "I think an annual exam is important for talking about health problems," she says. Using this time to chat about using condoms, fertility, and any random sex questions you might have is just as important as checking for STDs. So before you switch up your doctor visits, have a conversation about it with him or her first.

Lube Up
Sometimes when you're about to hit the sheets, it seems like your vagina just didn't get the memo. But it's totally normal—vaginal dryness can impact you if you take certain medications like antihistamines, antidepressants, or hormonal birth control. It can also crop up after pregnancy or shortly before menopause. When this happens, make sure you’re communicating with your partner so they don't forge ahead before you're properly lubricated, which is obviously painful and can cause abrasions. Or just use lube to speed up the process and make sex even hotter, says Minkin.

Say No To Douching
Think you need some assistance keeping things all clear down there? You don't. The vagina actually cleans itself, says Dena Harris, M.D., a clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at New York University. Plus, studies have shown that using intravaginal hygiene products can put you at increased risk of infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, and STDs. Just don't do it.

Handle With Care While Cycling
An unexpected place you might be putting your vaginal health at risk is the cycling studio. If you're a frequent rider, you could be at risk for genital numbness, pain, and tingling (not in a good way) while cycling. In fact, a study of female cyclists in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that a majority experienced these symptoms. If you love to hit up cycling studios, try wearing padded shorts and following these form modifications to keep your vagina pain-free during your workout.

Approach Antibiotics with Caution
Another threat to your nether region's good bacteria are antibiotics. Those pills can kill off some of that wonderful lactobacilli that keep your vagina healthy, says Minkin. Obviously, if you have to take an antibiotic to fight infection, you shouldn't pass up the prescription, just load up on probiotic Greek yogurt to reduce the damage, she says.

Be Mindful of the Order of Sex Acts
Make sure not to go from anal to vaginal sex without changing the condom or properly cleaning off first, says Minkin. Going from backdoor to front exposes your vagina to a host of bacteria and can up your risk of infections, she says.

Be Careful With Soap

That scented body wash may be awesome, but it doesn't belong anywhere near your genitals, says Minkin. Soap can be really drying to the sensitive skin around your vulva, and you really only need to rinse with warm water to keep things clean down there. But if you just don't feel right about going soap-free, stick with a plain, gentle, unscented soap, she says.

Gold

Human faeces contains gold, silver and other metals which could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, say scientists who are investigating ways to extract the precious metals from poop. Treated solid waste contains gold, silver and other metals, as well as other rare elements such as palladium and vanadium that are used in electronics and alloys, researchers have found.

"There are metals everywhere, in your hair care products, detergents, even nanoparticles that are put in socks in order to prevent bad odours," said Dr Kathleen Smith, from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Whatever their origin, the wastes containing these metals all end up being funnelled through wastewater treatment plants, where Smith said many metals end up in the leftover solid waste.

At treatment plants, wastewater goes through a series of physical, biological and chemical processes. The end products are treated water and biosolids. Smith said more than seven million tonnes of biosolids come out of American wastewater facilities each year. About half of that is used as fertilizer on fields and in forests, while the other half is incinerated or sent to landfills.

Smith and her team are on a mission to find out exactly what is in our waste. To do this, they are taking a page from the industrial mining operations' method book and are experimenting with some of the same chemicals, called leachates, which this industry uses to pull metals out of rock. While some of these leachates have a bad reputation for damaging ecosystems when they leak or spill into the environment, Smith said that in a controlled setting, they could safely be used to recover metals in treated solid waste.

So far, her group has collected samples from small towns in the Rocky Mountains, rural communities and big cities. In the treated waste, Smith's group has already started to discover metals like platinum, silver and gold. She stated that they have observed microscopic-sized metal particles in biosolids using a scanning electron microscope.

"The gold we found was at the level of a minimal mineral deposit," she said, meaning that if that amount were in rock, it might be commercially viable to mine it.

Breast Implants

Breast implants get safer, less likely to be rejected by the body
Is breast implant a good thing? The procedure may have its advocates the world over, but there enough people who are against it, given common complaints such as infection, pain and discomfort. But those in favour of it, may have something to cheer as scientists have developed implants that will not be rejected by the body.

Scientists have discovered a way to enhance the surface of silicone breast implants to make them less likely to be rejected by the body.

The research team, from the University of Manchester in the UK, says that one in five people with breast implants grow scar tissue that calls for more surgery due to pain and deformity.

"Some of the surfaces seen on implants today were designed originally in the 60s and 70s and therefore there is an unmet need for delivering the next generation of biomimetic breast implant surfaces," says lead author Dr Ardeshir Bayat, of M-U's Institute of Inflammation and Repair.

This condition is called capsular contracture and it occurs when the body rejects a foreign object.

Springboarding on previous research suggesting that scar tissue is less likely to result from implants with textured surfaces, the research team created a surface similar to what the body is used to, such as the basal layer of the skin.

This provides a better environment for cells to grow on, according to the study.

"Importantly, the micro environment created by the features of a breast implant is critical for breast tissue cells to adhere to that surface and grow on," says Dr Ardeshir Bayat.

He compared the surface of conventional implants to the face of a smooth cliff, noting that the cells need a terrain of their own dimension to properly interact with.

What's more, the enhanced surface could help reduce chances of inflammation, which can result in scarring.

The research team tested their new implants over the course of a week -- the period post-operation where patients are most likely to develop complications -- and concluded that cells reacted peacefully to the new surface.

The researchers acknowledge that more work remains to be done before they will be ready to appear on the market, although they predict that when they are they won't be short of demand.

Nearly 400,000 cosmetic breast augmentations and reconstructions occur in the US alone each year, and according to the researchers, the number is growing.

Their paper was published in the journal Biomaterials.

Options for breast enhancement using the body's own stem cells exist, yet a recent report published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery says the claims to that and other such cosmetic procedures using stem cells are unsubstiantiated.

Brad Pitt

When it comes to men and their hairstyles, they leave a lot to be desired. This is partly because guys are rather clueless about what's trending, and partly because they shy away from experimenting with their hair. Don't believe me? Take a good look around you; chances are 7 out of 10 men would be sporting the same hairstyle they used to four years back. Let's just cut to the chase. You're nowhere getting younger, so it makes sense for your personal style to evolve with your age, and that includes your hairstyle too.

Now there's no harm in taking inspiration from a celebrity if you want to experiment with your hairstyle. Take Brad Pitt for example, he is one celebrity who has been all over the hair map. He is like a chameleon, switches from long hippie locks to a military cut with an ease that's hard to come by. That's exactly why we decided to track his hair history to tell you what to look for when going for a new hairstyle.

1) A sophisticated soul patch with a dandy hairstyle like Brad Pitt's is apt for guys who are looking for a sharp look for a festive occasion, say your friend's wedding. A heavy hairstyling cream spread on your entire head of hair with your fingers and then combed back will give you the look. Look out for a heavy hold cream.

2) Brad Pitt's current look which he is sporting while promoting his film 'Fury' is something that many guys can be onboard with. The hair is medium-long which is tousled and seen with long sideburns (an Indian guy's trademark). Ask your stylist to create layers on our crown and then style it only with your fingers.

3) No one gets long hair as perfect as Brad Pitt (unless of course you're Jared Leto)-whether it's long, colored, knotted or straightened. He owns the look. Long locks needs proper TLC, and just so it doesn't border on the line of unkempt, keep them properly trimmed.

4) If you've a square jawline and straight hair, make this your absolute go-to look. Cut your hair short (1 inches) from the sides and back, and 2 inches from the top. Dispense a little mousse on your palm and run it on your hair, and then style it with the help of your fingers.

5) The gelled-hair-don't-care look with those uber-stylish pair of glasses is meant for those who are mature and sophisticated. Apply a lightweight gel that just holds the hair in the right place and blow it back with hair dryer.

6) This high and tight fade haircut is the trendiest hairstyle Pitt has ever sported, and we don't complaint because he's 50 and he bloody rocks it. Perfect for the edgy ones who love to experiment. This is how you'll get the look.

7) If you manage to carry long straight streaked hair with even a little bit of nonchalance, you'll be the man. Again, the quality of your hair is of paramount importance when sporting neck-length hair. Keep it evenly trimmed from behind, and manually straighten it if the need arise. It's your perfect vacation look.

8) If there's anyone who can look delightfully masculine while sporting a man bun, it has to be Brad Pitt. It's best suited for thick long hair, especially wavy and curly hair. You must avoid the hairdo if you've fine, thin hair or a receding hairline as pulling it in a bun will pull the root of the hair thereby damaging it further.

9) Brad Pitt is the only man who can wear a biker goatee-and that too a salt and pepper one- with spikes and still look so dashing. Will work best on college-going guys.

10) The slick side part was a rage four months back, and the trend, it seems, is here to stay. Any man, age notwithstanding, can get the look. Here's how.

11) The movie-star look with spiky, frosted tips is perfect for that experimental entrepreneur who wants to redefine the business casual looks. The spikes can be achieved with the help of pomade.

12) The perfect fall hairstyle for men is this buzz cut which is rather easy to achieve and maintain. The look of the cut is very short, not more than an inch of hair on the top of the head, that you can barely run your fingers through. The trick is to be sure it's just slightly longer on the top than on the sides of the head. If the length of your hair is uniform all over, your face will look out of balance.

13) Although this is his 90s look, the straight shag is back again in vogue. The latest trend among guys is the side-parted shag. It's a no-fuss, easy and laidback hairstyle that exudes youthfulness which is why it is a hot favourite amongst men.

Weight Loss

Of course nights are great for going on dates, binge-watching Netflix, doing work, chatting on the phone—you name it. But you know what else they're great for? Setting yourself up for bigger and better weight-loss results. Just follow these tips to get yourself that much closer to your goal weight.

Have a Low-Sodium Dinner
"If you want to wake up feeling less bloated, definitely skip the Chinese dinner," says Keri Gans, R.D., author of The Small Change Diet. What happens is the salt stays in your system overnight, so you wake up puffier than you normally would. The best option is to cook a healthy meal of steamed veggies and a lean protein—neither of which should be loaded with salt.

Do a Nighttime Workout
You know that sweating can help you drop pounds, but you may think that exercising too close to bedtime can keep you up at night. Luckily, that's not true; a 2013 survey from the National Sleep Foundation found that active people are 56 to 67 percent more likely to say they usually get a good night's sleep—no matter what time of day they exercise. Check out these four reasons why it's OK to work out at night.

Pack Your Lunch
The average restaurant meal contains more than twice the number of calories you should be consuming in one sitting, according to a 2013 study—and that's not even taking into account the lower calorie count you'll want your lunch to clock in at if you're trying to drop pounds. But in the a.m. rush, who has time to make lunch? Save yourself from a midday diet-wrecker by prepping your meal the night before.

Drink Lots of Water
H2O flushes out your system, which helps you get rid of any water you're retaining. But since you don’t want to be up all night running to the bathroom (and getting quality shuteye is crucial to weight loss), Gans suggests putting a halt to your water chugging one hour before bedtime.

Make Sure Your Bedroom is Super Dark
The hormone melatonin can help your body produce more calorie-burning brown fat, according to an animal study published last year in Journal of Pineal Research. Since your body already produces melatonin when you’re in complete darkness, make sure your room is light-free to boost weight loss.

Turn Down the Thermostat Before Hitting the Hay

The idea of burning more calories while you sleep may sound too good to be true, but a National Institute of Health Clinical Center study found that people who slept in a 66-degree room burned seven percent more calories than people who snoozed at 75 degrees. Seven percent isn’t a ton—but it can’t hurt!

Constipation

What Is Constipation?
Constipation occurs when bowel movements become difficult or less frequent. The normal length of time between bowel movements ranges widely from person to person. Some people have bowel movements three times a day; others, only one or two times a week. Going longer than three days without a bowel movement is too long. After three days, the stool or feces become harder and more difficult to pass.

You are considered constipated if you have two or more of the following for at least 3 months:

  • Straining during a bowel movement more than 25% of the time
  • Hard stools more than 25% of the time
  • Incomplete evacuation more than 25% of the time
  • Two or fewer bowel movements in a week

What Causes Constipation?
Constipation is usually caused by a disorder of bowel function rather than a structural problem.

Common causes of constipation include:

  • Inadequate water intake
  • Inadequate fiber in the diet
  • A disruption of regular diet or routine; traveling
  • Inadequate activity or exercise or immobility
  • Eating large amounts of dairy products
  • Stress
  • Resisting the urge to have a bowel movement, which is sometimes the result of pain from hemorrhoids
  • Overuse of laxatives (stimulant laxatives such as senna (Senokot)) which, over time, weaken the bowel muscles
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis
  • Antacid medicines containing calcium or aluminum
  • Medicines (especially strong pain medicines, such as narcotics, antidepressants, or iron pills)
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Pregnancy
  • Colon cancer
  • In some cases, lack of good nerve and muscle function in the bowel may also be a cause of constipation.

What Are the Symptoms of Constipation?
Symptoms of constipation can include:

  • Infrequent bowel movements or difficulty having bowel movements (straining)
  • Hard or small stools
  • Sense of incomplete bowel movement
  • Swollen abdomen or abdominal pain
  • Pain
  • Vomiting

There may also be occasional diarrhea resulting from hard stool obstructing the colon.

How Can I Prevent Constipation?
There are several things you can do to prevent constipation. Among them:

Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fiber. Good sources of fiber are fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole-grain bread and cereal (especially bran). Fiber and water help the colon pass stool.
Drink 1 1/2 to 2 quarts of water and other fluids a day (unless fluid restricted for another medical condition). Liquids that contain caffeine, such as coffee and soft drinks, seem to have a dehydrating effect and may need to be avoided until your bowel habits return to normal. Some people may need to avoid milk, as dairy products may be constipating for them.
Exercise regularly.
Move your bowels when you feel the urge.

Home Remedy :
1. Oil…it gets more than cars running

Pure olive oil is more than just a healthy and tasty fat, it can also help relieve constipation. It’s not surprising really when you consider what olive oil’s texture and consistency is like- it’s practically the poster child for constipation home remedies. It stimulates your digestive system, which helps get things moving through your colon, and taken regularly it can prevent constipation as well.

You will need…
-1 tablespoon of olive oil
-1 teaspoon of lemon juice (optional)

Directions
In the morning consume one tablespoon of olive oil. It works best on an empty stomach, so have it before you eat anything else. If you forget, wait until later when you haven’t eaten for a while. You can mix it with a little bit of lemon juice if you like to lighten the flavor (lemon juice also acts as a natural aid for constipation.)

2. Freshen up from the inside out

Ah the scent of a fresh lemon…did you ever think your stomach might appreciate it as much as your nose? The citric acid in lemon juice acts as a stimulant for your digestive system, and can also help flush out toxins and undigested material that may have built up along the walls of the colon. Mixing the juice with water not only lessens the intensity of the lemon flavor, but helps get you the fluids you need to get everything moving normally again.
You will need…
-1 fresh lemon
-1 cup of warm water

Directions
Squeeze the juice of 1 lemon into 1 cup of warm water. Drink or sip until finished completely.

3. Molasses makes the world go ‘round

Blackstrap molasses has been a sweet savior for more than a few sufferers of constipation, be it chronic or occasional. The reason blackstrap molasses works so well is because of how it is made. Regular molasses is essentially pure cane sugar juice boiled to concentrate and crystallize the sugar. The third boiling results in blackstrap molasses, which is crystallized but contains significant amounts of vitamins and minerals, specifically magnesium, which is what helps the constipation. It’s natural, tasty, and while you thank goodness someone decided to repeatedly boil a bunch of sugar, your body will thank you for the natural remedy.

You will need…
-1 teaspoon of blackstrap molasses
-warm water or tea (optional)

Directions
Consume one teaspoon of blackstrap molasses. Start slow and small here-if you don’t like the flavor of molasses, you can add it to a cup of warm water or tea to dilute the taste. If you find that a teaspoon has not been effective, you can go as high as 1-2 tablespoons, but try less at first.

4. Coffee is our friend (sometimes)

A lot of people love their morning coffee, but it does more than just give off heavenly aromas and help you perk up. Caffeine is a natural stimulant for the digestive system, so indulging in a cup of joe will help get you up and running in more ways than one. 1-2 cups is fine, but make sure you don’t overdo it-too much can actually have the opposite effect. Coffee is a diuretic and makes you urinate more frequently, and if you drink it an excess, it can cause constipation by dehydrating your body and drawing out water that would normally soften your stool.

5. Get moving

If you want stuff to move through your body, you need to move too! Our lifestyle these days not only involves dietary changes that increase constipation, but we’re often sitting much more than we’re active. While there isn’t an exact scientific reason as to why lack of exercise is linked with getting clogged up, we can assume that moving the body helps get the smooth muscle in the colon moving as well. Keep in mind, however, that you should wait an hour after big meals before exercising. There are also specific stretches and workouts that are supposed to help with getting good old number 2 out the door.

6. Go natural (aka fiber, fiber, and more fiber)

You’ll hear people talk a lot about how a natural diet helps relieve and prevent constipation. An overall healthy diet just improves everything, and our bodies know how to process fruits, veggies, grains and roughage more than the refined or artificial foods that don’t pass as easily. To get more specific, natural foods tend to contain boatloads of fiber-that magical word that signifies the end of toilet suffrage. In short, fiber is material that cannot be digested, and it acts like a sponge. It draws water from its surroundings, making it swell, which softens stool and adds bulk to it, which in turn helps it pass. Like coffee, some kinds of fiber (like beans) can contribute to constipation, so always drink plenty of water. Some good fiber-filled foods include-

-Beans
-Apricots
-Whole grain bread
-Berries
-Broccoli
-Plums, pears, and apples
-nuts
-Potatoes (skip the fries though)

7. Get some FLAXitive

Flaxseed oil is a pretty simple home remedy for constipation. It sort of coats the walls of the intestine, as well as stool, and increases the number of bowel movements you are having. Enjoying your oil with orange juice is a double whammy when it comes to constipation, since oranges have a good amount of fiber in them (make sure to get orange juice with pulp, which is what has most of the fiber.)

You will need…
-1 glass of orange juice with pulp (8 oz.)
-1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil

Directions
Mix 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil with 1 glass of orange juice. Drink as needed, but give it time (up to 5 hourse) to start working so you don’t overdo it.

8. Aloe-it’s benefits aren’t just skin deep

Aloe is known to soothe minor cuts and burns, but it can also soothe your tummy. It’s best to use pure aloe vera gel from the plant. The gel straight from the plant is more concentrated than commercial aloe juice so don’t use more than 2 tablespoons. If you don’t have an aloe plant, than drinking aloe juice can accomplish similar results.

You will need…
-2 tablespoons of pure aloe gel or 1 cup of aloe vera juice

Directions
Mix two tablespoons of pure gel with fruit juice and drink in the morning, OR drink one cup of aloe vera juice as needed.

9. Establish a routine

Potty schedules aren’t just for puppies, they’re a great way to relieve and prevent constipation in humans too. Regulating the timing of when you go to the bathroom will regulate your bowel movements as well. Set aside about 15 minutes anywhere from 1-3 times a day, and take your time, even if nothing happens. Make sure you stay relaxed, and eventually your body will catch on.

10. Baking soda does it all

Baking soda lies at the heart of home remedies. It’s is so incredibly versatile, and it pretty much does its job 95% of the time. It works incredibly well for constipation (and tummy aches in general) because it is a bicarbonate, which will encourage air to come out of you one way or another, and relieve pain from pressure. It also re-alkalizes the stomach, neutralizing the acid a little bit and helping things pass through your gut.

You will need…
-1 teaspoon baking soda
-1/4 cup warm water

Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with ¼ cup of warm water. Drink all of the mixture-the quicker you finish it, the better it seems to work.

11. Empty out with Epsom salt

Epsom salt is an effective home remedy for constipation for two main reasons. First, the salt draws water from its surroundings, softening up stool and making it easier to pass. Second, the magnesium that is present in the salt promotes contraction of the bowel muscles, which also makes passing easier. Table salt can be useful in terms of drawing water out, but it lacks the magnesium that Epsom has, so try and use Epsom salt if possible.

You will need…
-2 teaspoons of Epsom salt (for adults) OR ½ teaspoon (for children)*
-1 cup of water or fruit juice

Directions
Dissolve 2 teaspoons of Epsom salt in one cup of water or fruit juice and drink all of it. If within 4 more hours there is no sign of bowel movement, you may take one more dose. Only use ½ teaspoon for children.
*Consult the box for dosing

12. Don’t forget the prunes…

Perhaps one of the most classic cures for constipation is prunes or prune juice. The fruit works as a natural laxative because it has high amounts of fiber, and contains sorbitol. Sorbitol softens stools because it is a natural carbohydrate that is not easily ingested, causing it to draw a lot of water as it passes through the intestines and adding bulk to stool. Be careful though-too much and sorbitol can cause gas and make stool too soft.

You will need…
-2 glasses of prune juice (8oz)

Directions
Drink one glass of prune juice in the morning and one at night to relieve constipation. It should start working within a few hours, so it’s important to let one glass pass through your intestines before attempting to drink another-or else you risk diarrhea. You can also eat several prunes instead of drinking the juice if you prefer.

13. Heed natures call

This is a preventative measure to help ward off those uncomfortable bouts of constipation in the future, and it’s pretty straightforward. When you need to go to the bathroom-go! Your body is giving you the signal for a reason, and it’s a good idea to listen. The longer you hold it in, the more water is absorbed from the stool, and the harder it becomes. You’re body also only sends the signal to have a bowel movement for a certain amount of time, after a certain amount of time. That’s why if you have to go really badly and don’t, you stop feeling like you have to go. Delay the duty and you may not get the heads up to go until you’re even more clogged.

14. Dandy Dandelions

Dandelions are a terribly annoying weed, but you might view them differently after they help relieve your constipation. The constituents of dandelions make it a gentle laxative as well as an effective detoxifier, and a cup of dandelion tea will be enormously beneficial to those who are suffering from constipation due to inactiveness or the consumption of a lot of processed foods (although drinking it does not mean you don’t need to exercise or eat healthy!)

You will need…
-1-2 teaspoons of dried dandelion leaves
-1 cup of hot water

Directions
Put 1-2 teaspoons of dried dandelion leaves into a mug, and pour hot water over them. Cover and let steep for 6-10 minutes. Drink up to 3 times a day.

15. Bacteria is necessary

Healthy gut flora is vital to keep our digestive system working properly, especially in these times, when our stomach is getting pounded with all sorts of processed sugars and foods. Working to keep the good bacteria in our bodies strong and plentiful will help prevent constipation, and lessen its severity should it still occur. There are a number of ways to go about helping your bacteria flourish, but one simple method is to enjoy a cup of yogurt, which is filled with probiotics, with breakfast and during the day.

You will need…
-1-3 cups of plain yogurt

Directions
Eat a cup of yogurt with breakfast, and then on its own or with snacks throughout the day.
