7 Things Every Man Should Know About Using Moisturisers

You wouldn’t go a day without drinking water, right? Likewise, you shouldn’t go a day without hydrating your skin. It’s not something that is meant to help you on that very day. The benefits of moisturising will go a long way—something that will be visible years later in the future too.  Lack of moisturising causes skin to look tugged and dry. The skin, as a result, will crack and that will cause wrinkles eventually. So, if you’re not into the habit of moisturising your skin daily, we suggest it’s time you start doing that, pronto. But before that, here are 7 things every man should know about using moisturisers.

1) One of the main reasons why you should use moisturisers is because these creams contain ingredients that help your skin perform better. They not only protect the skim from foreign ailments such as dust, dirt and pollutants but also protect it from losing its important components that keep skin elastic and healthy.

2) Choose your moisturiser according to your skin type—whether it’s oily, dry, combination or normal. A well-chosen moisturiser can enhance your skin’s function. Your skin, therefore, will look and also act younger. Skin is supposed to be the largest organ, so it only makes more sense to use a custom moisturizer.

3) Truth be told, moisturisers do not add any moisture to your skin. They just act as a natural barrier that allows your skin to deal with whatever it has to deal with in a better manner.

4) Most face moisturisers contain, rather should contain, sunscreen.  It is imperative to look for a cream that will protect your skin from the harmful ultraviolet (UVA and UVB) rays of the sun which is why you must get a cream with SPF properties of at least 30.

5) It’s always best advised to moisturise your skin thoroughly every day, but more so at night. This is because during the night our bodies lose a lot of water and a good moisturiser will make sure your skin remains hydrated. Moreover, the skin goes into a repair mode only at night, so, a right moisturiser with right ingredients will also help in the repair process.

6) The best time to moisturise your skin is after you shave or exfoliate. Shaving or exfoliating is a very important process as they help you get rid of the dead skin cells but they also strip your face from some of its essential oils. Moisturising your skin later will help restore balance.  Also, one should ideally moisturise after a bath when your body is still wet. This will keep your body moisturised for a long time.

7) There is no written rule on how much and when you should moisturise your skin. Skin type is an important factor. So people with dry skin should ideally moisturise more than people with oily or normal skin. There are some occasions that require more moisturising than others. One should ideally moisturise more during winters, after a flight journey or after a swim. These activities can render your skin dry.

Grooming Tips

However much you protest, it cannot be denied that people instantly judge you based onhow you look.
You could be a successful professional raking in the moolah and having recently acquired a swanky car, but if you are dressed shabbily with food stains on your clothes and with two days' growth of stubble on your face, then you will be judged accordingly. We're here to make sure that never happens to you! Read on and get a grip on how to make a great first impression.
Sticking to basics
A healthy body does it for you. If you take care of your body, it's half the job already done when it comes to making a good impression. Eat regular and balanced meals and get your share of physical exercise. Smoke and drink only occasionally if at all, hard... we know!! Cultivating habits like this will go a long way in making you a person with a significant presence and who is sure to make a lasting first impression.

Pamper your skin
To ensure that your skin is glowing and that you look fresh, do what the doctor ordered. Make sure you drink at least two liters of water a day. If possible drin at least a beer glass full of water in the morning. It takes a getting used to but does wonders for your complexion. Get enough sleep so that you don't have puffy eyes, and also moisturize regularly to keep your skin nourished (Try L'oreal Hydra). Before stepping out, always check your face to make sure you don't have any smudges of dirt on it, or any stray hair growing or crust in your eyes. This just takes you a few seconds and it will surely add to your look.

Close shave
Shave regularly to look your best. If you sport a beard or a moustache or a French beard, then make sure it is trimmed neatly and has no stray hairs sticking out in multiple directions. Also make sure that you shave in the same direction as the growth of the hair, and that you soften your facial hair before shaving it. This will ensure that there aren't ingrowths and also reduce the possibilities of getting nicked while shaving.

Tips for lips
Chapped lips will never get you anywhere with that girl you like, so use lip balm regularly to keep them moisturized and smooth. Don't put too much on or it might end up looking like you're wearing lip gloss. If it embarrasses you to use it, only apply it when you're in the washroom.

Get in the shower
The basic step to staying clean and smelling good even without any cologne. This is a step you are not allowed to miss because it's as simple as water, shower and towel. So whether you've just come back from the gym, woken up, or are going for a party - shower!

Keep your hands clean
Women notice nice hands and hands play a make-or-break role in business meetings because of the importance of a handshake. Cut and file your nails regularly and also make sure that they don't have any residue of food or dirt stuck in them. Keep a nail clipper, file and other items you might need in the shower so that you can save time needed to do this. Wash your hands frequently and especially after a meal because smelly and sweaty hands are the biggest turn off. Also use a bit of hand lotion on them to prevent your hands resembling tough hide.

Don't be shaggy
Since hair grows regularly, you have to always keep a check on when your ear, nose, chest hair needs a trim. It's best to trim hair from these parts at least once a week. Also shampoo and condition your hair every day. Of course if you have long hair, maybe alternate days would be fine, but never let your hair look greasy and straggly.

Shaving Brush

The shaving brush is probably the most neglected piece of grooming equipment in your bathroom. You probably dip it in the mug of water you used for your shave, remove visible lather and leave it alone.
In case you haven't noticed, your shaving brush is basically animal hair. Unless you're using a cheap nylon-hair brush. Anyway, by not thoroughly cleaning your brush, you're doing two things -
1. Applying chemicals from your last shave onto your face
2. Reducing the life of your brush.
Your brush exists to work with shaving cream and hot water to create an awesome lather to shave on. To get started, rinse your brush, root to tip (you'll find some old cream-good in the root. hang it out upside down in your shaving brush stand to drip-dry the leftover water in the bundle of hair that is your brush. If you don't have a stand ( I don't), put it in sunlight.
Putting it inside your bathroom cabinet immediately after a shave may cause mildew - it IS natural hair.
Cleaning the Shaving Brush: Inventory
A bit of vinegar (a pinch)
Detergent powder (another pinch)
A glass of water

Step 1: Cleaning your shaving brush

Rinse your brush under running water.

Step 2: Lather up the brush

Now rub in the detergent like a shampoo into the hairs of your brush.

Step 3: Soak

Put the soaped up brush inside the glass of water to soak for a minute.

Step 4:Rinse and repeat

Wash the brush again, removing all lather.

Step 5: Vinegar

Put the brush back in the glass, with clean water. Put in a good-sized pinch of vinegar. Let the brush soak in the vinegar water for a minute. Stir it a bit now and then

Step 6: Rinse and shine

Rinse out the brush.
I advise soaking the brush in water to soak out any residue + a bit more running water.
Now air out the brush - everyone can afford sunlight.

When should you clean the brush?

Hard water requires you to clean the brush more often. So does the use of shaving cream over soap (faster residue build-up). It also depends on how efficiently you clean out your brush when after you shave.

Casual rinsers should get the vinegar and detergent out when they notice any build-up near the brush - and this also depends on how often you shave.

Shaving Cuts

The Blade: A sharp blade slices through facial hair at skin level. A dull razor can do that too, but it also hacks a bit on facial skin.  The blade also must be clean, so pass it under running water, or dip it in your mug between strokes. If you medically need to be shave-cut proof, your best bet is an electrical shaver
Pre-Shave Preparation: Pre-Shave Lotion  There are some people who, after reading our article about shaving with olive oil have eliminated the need for pre-shave lubrication. However, even if you're feeling conservative and manly, a bit of your regular moisturizer, or a pre-shave lotion rubbed into the beard will go a long way for a softer beard and a better shave.
Warm Water:   As we have mentioned in many of articles on shaving,  rinsing your face with warm water makes your pores open up, and your beard absorb a bit of the water (so it's easier to slice through). And now that your facial hair are prepped for surgery, have your shaving kit at hand to get to work before your stubble gets dry, hard and lazy again.
The Shave: Don't shave against the grain. At least not on your first drive on the stubble course. Use short, downward strokes.
Adjust your grip for different facial contours; the neck, lips and chin are problem areas for a lot of men. Get the skin flat by pulling the skin down (for your lips), or up (for chin and neck) If you really must, try to shave as much stubble as possible before reapplying shaving cream/ gel and and gently lifting the beard against residual grain.
